Aesthetic dentistry

Aesthetic dental treatments correct imperfections such as small interdental gaps or dental crowding, dental trauma, asymmetric teeth or uneven texture, facial disharmony or discolouration. The aesthetic dental treatments include dental laminates, professional teeth whitening, inlays and veneers – including the zirconium.

Dental whitening

The food and liquids that we consume, as well as smoking, affect the colour of our teeth. As we get older, our teeth change their colour naturally as well, darkening and becoming less bright. Teeth whitening procedures change the hue of the teeth, usually achieving a colour 5 to 7 shades brighter. The whitening substances contain an active ingredient – mostly carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, with concentrations of 10-20% – which correct the colour on the surface and within the teeth. Professional whitening (at the dental clinic) and at home (using a type of mouth guard) are based on this method.

Some useful information

– Yellow teeth respond best to teeth whitening treatment.

– Teeth stained in brown and grey, teeth with spots and teeth with stripes caused by tetracycline or excessive fluoride, are harder to whiten, even when using a high quality treatment.

– In case of gum disease or highly sensitive teeth, it is recommended to avoid teeth whitening.

– Teeth whitening is not recommended when teeth have fillings or restorations, as whitening has no effect on them and will make them stand out. In these situations, there is the option of veneers.

– Where there is significant tooth substance loss, we recommend veneers, which not only build the teeth back up, but also offer the advantage of a whiter smile.

– In case of pregnancy or breastfeeding, we do not recommend teeth whitening.

– The effect of whitening is not permanent. The teeth slowly return to the initial colour, but this is made worse by habits like smoking or excessive consumption of black tea or coffee.

– The non-vital teeth (whose nerve was removed) can be whitened. This requires 2-3 whitening sessions, until the desired shade is obtained.

– Regardless of the chosen procedure (whitening in the dental clinic or at home), it is preceded by cleaning of the teeth (scaling, airflow) and an impression, which is necessary for the fabrication of mouth guards used for fluoridation (this fluoridation is important for reducing the risk of dental sensitivity).

– The whitening performed in the dental clinic is faster, as a more concentrated whitening agent is used (the gum and surrounding tissues are protected with a special dam). The length of the whitening process is 15-45 minutes. There are situations when the session is repeated in order to obtain the desired result.

– The whitening carried out at home requires more time (7-14 days), as the whitening substance has a lower concentration (the concentration of the substance, as well as the duration of wearing the mouth guards, will be determined by the dentist).
